The FBI doen't generally recruit school children to infiltrate 
adult organizations.  We have evidence that Snape was a bigot 
when he was 15 or so.

We have no evidence that Snape was ever interested in power per 
se.  And it is unbelievable that he would join an organization 
whose goals he did not believe in, and then become disillusioned 
that he did not believe in its goals.

All of the evidence indicates that Snape was a Death Eater out of 
conviction.  In the absence of evidence, any speculation to the 
contrary is just wishful thinking.
