Me,
The thought that struck me here ties in with this, and the argument
over whether or not Neville was present at the time of his parents'
torture. I think that N's parents were tortured in order to find
out the whereabouts of their son. V must have found out about all
the children born in accordance with the prophecy and gone about
finding and elminating them. Knowing the fate of their son if they
disclosd his location, they would have of course resisted the
cruciatus curse to the point of madness. Perhaps they were
secretkeepers, hence why V didnt kill them??
Did the fact that N's parents sacrificed themselves for their son in
a similar fashion to Lily, offer Neville some amount of protection?
Afterall he was the only one aside from Harry left standing at the
final showdown in the dept. of mysteries.
This would mean that V went after N before looking for Harry. Maybe
there's a further reason why N fits the prophecy more than H.

Another thing that struck me was slightly unrelated but annnyway,
why did V want to kill James but not Lily. Harry's father was not
mentioned in the prophecy, yet he killed him straight off. I dont
know... I'm rambling now!!!
