I agree, I believe Sirius is dead for all practical purposes but not 
necessarily gone. We are never going to see his human form walking 
around on Earth again. However there seem to be too many clues, such 
as DD's "death is the next journey" diatribe, ghosts (though the 
scene with Nick at the end of OoP seemed to exclude this scenario), 
the talking portraits and especially the Arch in the death room in 
the Ministry. I believe Sirius will be back in some sense and I want 
to believe that his "return" will be in conjunction with the 
explanation of the arch.
