I'm guessing the only reason the Basilisk differentiated was because 
Voldemort was telling him through parseltongue (through Ginny I 
guess) who to kill. The Basilisk itself probably does not care who it 
kills. But its safe enought to assume that Tom Riddle was controlling 
it.
