Ali: interesting ideas.  I can definitely see the VD doesn't 
understand love/sacrifice angle.  I still do think, however, 
that "the old magic" refers to an actual sort of magic which has 
slipped out of commun usage (for some reason).

I was just talking with someone about this the other day.  Blood 
heritage is not altogether clear yet in the HP books.  Just like real 
life, individuals with mixed race/ethnicity find themselves stuck in 
a labeling void.  Is HP a mugblood (I also avoid the term mudblood, 
opting for an abr. form of muggle-blood)?  ****SPOILER****  When HP 
says VD is mugblood at the end of OotP, the DEs have a negative 
reaction to it.  It is almost like a half-and-half person can be 
either way, depending on who they hang with.
