To make Harry feel even more guilty. I think that this present will
not work now that it is broken. I don't think "reparo" will re-endow
the mirror with whatever magical properties it had before. No
particular reason - just that it would be a switch from the past,
where Harry's gifts have always worked. In this book, the Firebolt
that Sirius gave Harry was confiscated. The knife he gave Harry
melted in the door in the Dept. of Mysteries. Now, the mirror is
broken. Other than the DADA books that Sirius and Remus gave Harry,
all the other gifts Harry got from Sirius have been taken from him or
somehow destroyed.
