Transfiguration

I have a couple questions about Tranfiguration maybe some on can 
help me with.  My questions mainly deal with animals becoming 
objects.
1) How long will an animal stay tranfigured?
2) Do animal still have to eat when they are changed or will they 
last indefinitly?
3) Is it safe to assume people can be transfigured?
I ask these things wondering if there are any objects in Harry's 
life that could be someone.
I also ask wondering if the statue at the Ministry of Magic is 
someone we should know?
