In CoS Hermione describes the Mandrake as such: "It is used to
return people who have been transfigured or cursed to their original
state." Of course, it was used for those who were petrified (uh, is
that a form of transfiguration?) Hmmm....you may have something
there. Can people be transfigured again their will? Neville's toad
comes to mind. Oooh, the possibilities!!

My thinking is that the statue at the Mom is very symbolic. Some
wizards and witches think themselves above other creatures in the WW-
-being idolized by them. Not exactly spanking of equality.
Also, the headless wizard statue was protecting or "guarding" Harry
during D. and V.'s fight:
"Harry opened his eyes, saw his glasses lying at the heel of the
headless statue that had been guarding him, but which now lay flat
on its back, cracked and immobile."
Symbolic perhaps of Sirius being gone and D. turning out to be quite
fallible and human. Harry's on his own.
