Hello all,
I've been lurking for a bit, so I guess I'll dip my toe in here.
I'm glad someone brought up this discussion of Hagrid. I wouldn't say
that I "hate" him exactly. He's more infuriating than anything else.
Like everyone else, I had heard that someone was going to buy the
farm in OoP, and while I suspected it would be Sirius, in my mind I
kept thinking "God, let it be Hagrid." I still have my fingers
crossed for book 6.
I still don't understand how he was made a teacher in the first place.
I don't recall the age at which he was expelled, but it's clear that
he has not finished his basic education. Maybe you don't need heavy-
duty academic qualifications to teach Care of Magical Creatures, but
I admit, it kind of pissed me off that a glorified Groundskeeper
Willie was sitting at the staff table with Snape, McGonagall and the
rest, as if his infantile fascination with monsters were equal to
their obvious academic accomplishments.
Hagrid reminds me of some crazy, drunken relative who all the kids
love, because he lets them do the things that sensible adults would
never allow in a million years. As far as I can tell, his lessons
fall somewhere between useless and less than useless. The sooner
Harry (and everyone else for that matter) are out from under his
influence, the better.
I would gladly allow Hagrid to care for my Labrador over the weekend,
but if I had kids, I wouldn't entrust them to his care for 15
minuntes. That's my two cents on the subject
