>>> But if there's only 6 at the table... where's all the others? Away at
home? Probably. With family? Maybe.

Maybe many people never get married. Or maybe teachers just don't get
married. Or, if they do, they and their spouses know they have to be apart
for most of the year (strange indeed, but if wizards/witches live a long
time...). The thing is, it could be very likely that much of the staff is
single, because we have no idea what marriage is like in wizarding
culture.<<<

Lady Macbeth:
Oh, is that a big problem, them being apart for the better part of a year?
:?

Actually, I'm being for a large part facetious there, because I'm one of
those wives who's husband is gone a good part of the time. He's an over the
road truck driver, gets home once a month, maybe twice if his truck is in
for maintenance inspection or repairs. His company tries to set it up so
that he's home for a day or two every three weeks. During the summer I can
sometimes ride with him for a trip, as I'm currently unemployed, but from
August to May I'm a college student and can't take ANY time away from
school. So, I'm back into that "school year" of not seeing my husband more
than a couple days a month.

Also, someone mentioned military families - I know a good number of people
who were rather upset with the Shrub saying that the home call of a portion
of our forces in Iraq will suspended indefinitely - because they've got
family (husband, wife, child, parent) over there and they're stuck here.
Even when they're only away for a few months, that's a few months that you
don't see that person, PLUS you worry about what could happen to them in the
meantime.

While it can be said for argument's sake that the AVERAGE family has both
spouses at home and/or together most of the time, I find that there are a
good many who get by well enough WITHOUT that scenario, and the teachers'
lives could easily be such.

JK has mentioned that some of the Hogwarts professors HAVE had spouses, but
that information has been restricted for reasons yet unseen:

http://www.comicrelief.com/harrysbooks/pages/transcript.shtml

This would suggest to me that some of them are willing to go to that extra
effort despite having pressures that the "average" marriage doesn't have.

As for me - I'm a Dumbldore/McGonagall shipper myself, so even if they're
not married, I can still picture them together. ~_^
