What really is making me thinking it over and over again is the fact that
one picture without a real function got a name:
Phineas Nigellus.
All pictures with a bigger function do have names. Even the Fat Lady got to
show her importance on some points. So Phineas only being a messenger would
not fit.
Especially because he allreaddy had started to be some kind of helping
person talking to Harry while being at GP and doing more than just passing
on messages of Dumbledore's. He became some kind of character, no matter if
you like him or not.

So my theory is that he will be serving some kind of function. Maybe to be
some addition helping Harry to live with the loss of Sirius. I just remeber
how he reacted on the news that Sirius died.... I think it was more than
just the last Black would be dead....
