Added:
Firenze leaving his herd has bothered me as well.  I am not under 
sthe impression that his teaching will be short term as someone says 
he will be co-teaching with Trelwany.  There is some clue in the fact 
that he came to help DD, and the statue fountain at the MOM.  
Remember there is a wizard, wtich, golbin, lef, and CENTAUR.  Nothing 
in the book gives us any clue to what this represents or who these 
beings are.  I dont have the book in front of me, but seem to recall 
that Harry thought the wizard looked familar?  Anyway, I definitely 
think Firenze will play a bigger role in the next 2 books.
