In a way, having Harry kill Voldemort will be putting him through more crap.  The Wizarding World hasn't accepted him as a person, only as an icon.  That's why they can love him one minute, and call him a nutter the next.

Whenever Harry meets someone, he notices how their eyes always seek out the scar on his forehead.  I suspect that he thinks that they don't think of him as "Harry", but instead they think of him as "THE Harry Potter".  Harry, who has been starved of love, doesn't want this kind of attention, he wants intimacy.

If Neville were to have the ultimate triumph over Voldemort, Harry might finally get the anonymity he wants.
