Ron Weasley gets a bum rap. And Peter Pettigrew would
be lucky to be
a tenth as courageous and honorable as Ron.
I say the parallels that seem to be drawn here do not
match.
This is the kid who, at age 11, no less, rode a stone
knight into
the path of a stone queen, not knowing whether it
would be fatal, so
his two friends could go on.
Could anyone honestly see Pettigrew doing that?
How about a kid who, on a broken leg, tried to stand
and help Harry
fight against a man he thought was a convicted mass
murderer?
So much is made about the fight in GoF, but the silent
treatment
lasted a few weeks, not months. Harry was picked for
the tournament
in late October and the first task was Nov. 24.
And as soon as Ron realized how much danger his friend
was in, and
how stupid he was being, it was HIM that made the
first move toward
reconciliation. And his friendship hasn't wavered
since.
Ron has become a Quidditch hero. He is a prefect, and
maybe he's the
second choice because Dumbledore thought Harry was
going to be too
stressed out already, but that means Ron is still
above the rest of
the Gryffindor fifth-year boys.
In other words, Ron is stepping into his own, so the
idea that he
would betray Harry to get out from under his shadow
does not hold
water.
Ron doesn't consider Percy as someone to emulate. His
reactions to
Percy in OoP are anger and disgust.
My dawg Ron is going to be just fine, thank you.

My reply:

I agree with Darrin, if JKR did the whold betrayal
thing at this point it would make no sense at all. At
first, I thought a betrayal was definitely possible
after Ron got his prefect badge, but when we arrived
at school we realize that Ron and Hermione still
played and active role in Harry's life. It would have
been the perfect time to introduce a schism in their
friendship...yet, JKR does not do this. The Percy
element is also key to this. He thinks what Percy says
is absolutely ludicrous. Ron cares for Harry very
much. I think he considers him a best mate and
possibly a brother. I also think that Ron wishes that
Ginny would be chose Harry (why on Earth would he want
his sister who he is so protective of be with Harry if
he was to merely betray Harry). Perhaps, we haven't
seen it..but I don't think that Ron will betray Harry.
Honestly, I'm not sure who will...it doesn't seem
likely at this point to be anyone. It might be
interesting for one of the twins to go this route
though, you know money can change people and all.
