Here's another thought: I was listening to an old John Wayne movie last night 
(couldn't help it - Mom had the telly up loud) & was reminded that "croaker" 
is also a rather old slang term for a doctor.  Perhaps there's some connection 
with St. Mungo's?  Who sent the plant, after all?
