Sirius had to die for two reasons. Finchen mentions one. That Sirius
is the only person alive who'd have stood in the way of DD's plan,
ie, he would not let Harry be put in harm's way if he could help it.
2ndly, Harry needed to be forever protected from LV's ability to take
over his soul. The only way that could be accomplished was for Harry
to experience the feeling that drove LV out. That was his desire to
embrace death combined with his love for Sirius. LV is afraid of one
thing only, death. Now that Harry has proved he's more than willing
to give up life, he is protected from the kind of in-roads LV made in
OOP. Notice that DD did not directly address Harry (look him in the
eye) until LV fled his body at the MOM. Sirius had to die. Check out
posts 66983 and 67142 for a much more detailed analysis.
