Sirius had to die for two reasons. Finchen mentions one. That Sirius 
is the only person alive who'd have stood in the way of DD's plan, 
ie, he would not let Harry be put in harm's way if he could help it. 
2ndly, Harry needed to be forever protected from LV's ability to take 
over his soul. The only way that could be accomplished was for Harry 
to experience the feeling that drove LV out. That was his desire to 
embrace death combined with his love for Sirius. LV is afraid of one 
thing only, death. Now that Harry has proved he's more than willing 
to give up life, he is protected from the kind of in-roads LV made in 
OOP. Notice that DD did not directly address Harry (look him in the 
eye) until LV fled his body at the MOM. Sirius had to die. Check out
