Hm. It seems to me that Harry has always been thinking for himself. He turned to 
Sirius for guidance yes, but often he was left relying on his and his friends' planning. 
He got through the Triwizard Tournament by planning with Ron and Hermione. And 
he refused to use Sirius' gift to draw him out of safety. He was told time and again to 
perfect Occlumency, but he blew it off and tried to figure out what Voldemort was up 
to himself.

Considering the events that extended directly from Sirius' death, it seemed that the 
purpose was to expose Voldemort's return. If Bellatrix hadn't got the better of Sirius, 
Harry would not have pursued her to the lobby, Dumbledore and Voldemort would 
not have come after them and then engaged each other, and then Ministry officials 
would not have seen Voldemort with their own eyes.
