You would be able to change without your wand - because Sirius 
transformed while in Azkaban and I'm sure his wand had been taken 
from him when he was imprisoned. I wonder if his wand was broken in 2 
like Hagrid's or if it was put somewhere for the duration (like 
personal effects)? Plus - if you had to use a wand - where would it 
go while you were an animal - would it become part of your animal 
self so that wherever you were when you transformed back - you'd have 
it again?
