It's the same question as: Why would Nicolas Flamel want to drink 
the Elixir of Life? Same answer: Eternal Life. Insteresing, huh?

Perhaps Gryffindor faked his death, or simply disappeared, who 
knows, there could be a thousand explanations because Rowling 
doesn't give us much details about the Greatest Four's deaths.

It's very possible, but could also be neglected. Remember that Harry 
could pull out Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat in CoS, 
Dumbledore says that only a true Gryffindor could have done that, so 
Harry, as a true Gryffindor, could have make the red and gold sparks 
manifest in his first contact with Fawke's wand.
But still I cannot figure out what happened with Tom's wand.
