I don't know if it's only me, but what strikes me about Dolores
Umbridge is that she's infatuated with Cornelius Fudge.
I have already had this impression of Umbridge even before I
finished Book 5. Just think about it. I haven't got the book in front
of me right now, but here are some things in OoP which I believe
points to Dolores Umbridge's desperation to win favor with Fudge.

  1) Dolores Umbridge is a short, toady, "someone's maiden aunt"-
looking (in Harry's words), mediocre (in terms of wizard talent),
and ugly woman, with a simpering, falsely girlish voice and is a
fashion victim to boot (those kittens!). If she really wanted to snag
Cornelius looks won't get her very far. Having no beauty and brains
to attract Cornelius with, doing away with his enemies (Harry and
Dumbledore!) may give her very big brownie points with Cornelius.

2)If she's not pretty and she's not smart, the only thing going for
Dolores here is her loyalty to Fudge. She defends his name in front
of the Hogwarts students and teachers, especially if nobody else does.

  3) Dolores sent those dementors to Harry "...everyone wanted to
silence him (Harry), but it only me who really did something about
it." For Dolores, this is a sweet and loving gesture to Cornelius.

  4) Addressing the Minister of Magic as Cornelius in front of
McGonagall. "...Cornelius just sent it...oh, I mean the Minister sent
it." Looks like she wanted to flaunt her "closeness" to Fudge and
therefore show that she was better than the rest of them.

  5) Trying to use the Cruciatus Curse on Harry just to have
something to report to the Ministry. Judging from this line " What
Cornelius doesn't know won't hurt him." , I think it means that
Dolores won't mind breaking a few rules just to give Cornelius a
lovely new present, that is, informaton form Harry Potter himself.

That's all I remember for now. Will try to come up with
more.Meanwhile, it's my firm belief that deep down, Dolores is in
love with Fudge. I think Cornelius will never love her, but it isn't
for lack of trying.

Stay tuned for the next D love C angles and proofs! (^.~) More
coming up!

 toujours,
