Harry," and I will have to believe that over the past couple of
years he has done a lot of thinking. And maybe him and Snape didn't
get along but he has to have some respect for him given everything

I got the impression that Sirius was just saying that because Harry
was so upset. He didn't seem sincere at all to me. Especially when
he says "I'm not proud" and "You can't blame James" practically in
the same breath.
If James had been throwing curses at Snape for 6 years, you can't
expect Snape to just stop defending himeself (and occassionally
getting revenge) one day for no reason at all. I'm quite sure James
didn't spend a week thowing no curses or hexes at Snape and just
disarming him and nothing more if Snape tried something in order to
let Snape know he changed. Besides, I get the impression that even
in seventh year Jaes did far more than defend himself. If he'd only
defended himself, he wouldn't feel the need to hide it from Lily.
