I completely agree with this - oh the joy of finding a good Snape
post! Snape has done many good things: He was a spy for Dumbledore and
left the DE's before Voldemorts fall - "at great personal risk".
He has taught bundles of witches and wizards potions, and has demanded
that they know the subject inside-out, and although all those witches
and wizards may not like him - I bet they still know those potions. I
taught at a public high school for a month (a brief spell of madness)
and one thing that another teacher said has always stuck with me:
"They don't have to like you, they have to respect you. You are not
their friend, you are their teacher." So true, and so Snape.
Also, Dumbledore trusts Snape completely. He has said it so many
times, and he must have a really good reason for it, one that he
hasn't shared with Harry, because frankly it's none of Harry's business.
He saved Harry's life in the first year, and has kept a close eye on
him ever since. Trying to stop him from going to Hogsmeade, teaching
him Occlumency (even though Harry was trying his hardest *not* to
learn it). And then saving his life again, and the lives of others by
contacting Order members when Harry and Co. went to the Department of
Mysteries. Had Harry learnt Occlumency, none of that would have happend.
I'm sure Snape has done many othergood things that we don't yet know
of. I think the world of him!
