those witches and wizards may not like him - I bet they still know
those potions. I taught at a public high school for a month (a brief
spell of madness) and one thing that another teacher said has always
stuck with me: "They don't have to like you, they have to respect
you. You are not their friend, you are their teacher." So true, and
so Snape.<snip>

This is why Professor Snape is one of my favourite characters. He is
rather complex (I know, nothing like stating the obvious!, poised to
go either way, and you really wonder which way it will be. I have
read many posts referring to JKR saying Snape is an unpleasant man,
etc and you should "watch out for him" or "keep your eye on him".
This is not exactly true. What she had said in several interviews
is... "that Snape is an unpleasant man and a cruel teacher who does
in fact abuse his authority as a teacher, BUT that there is MUCH MORE
to him and that he bears watching, NOT that he should be "watched out
for". She also stated we would find out about Snape's "love
interest" in book 7. Of course, she also remarked "what woman would
want Snape to fall in love with her?"! (I can think of quite a few,
LOL!) Snape may not be Mr. Nice Guy and I am sure he has an agenda
all his own (as in he isn't doing all this covert work for the good
of all mankind). He also strikes me as someone you can depend on to
back you up if you are on Dumbledore's side and I think he will
remain loyal to Dumbledore... OK, I HOPE he remains loyal to
Dumbledore!
