While I like Snape as well, he's *is* petty and small-minded. For all his 
complexity, he's bullying Harry for something Harry's father almost two decades 
ago, and that's NOT the behavior of mature adult. He also bullies Neville 
mercilessly, with even less excuse. 

That is not to say he isn't shrewd, or brave, or any of the other things you 
admire about him, but you can't wash away his faults (and he's got a lot) just 
because he's the most interesting and mysterious character in the books.
