Me (Sarcasticmuppet):
I'm working on a Sorting Hat Ship (well, more like a cadamaran) that
realizes this: The Sorting Hat doesn't really sort anyone, but
instead puts Hogwarts students exactly where they want to go. At
most, the S.H. gives suggestions on which house might be best, but it
boils down to choice (as usual!). Examples: The S.H. tells Harry he
would do well in Slytherin and Hermione that she would do well in
Ravenclaw. Yet the Sorting Hat put them both in Gryffindor because
*that is what they wanted*. Ron's always wanted to be in Gryffindor
and Malfoy's always wanted to be in Slytherin--the S.H. had no
objections, so it didn't hesitate. Once sorted the students,
surrounded by others that portray the qualities of that house,
eventually grow into having those qualities themselves.
