I don't think I've posted this here . . . sorry if I already have. 
This is my pet theory (pun intended) for the final two novels:

I suspect that Harry will be the *chosen* heir of Gryffindor. Given 
Rowling's stance that choices matter more than blood, it will not 
make sense for Harry to be a blood relative of Gryffindor. However, 
as Harry embodies the qualities that Gryffindor appreciated, I 
believe he will somehow get the honor of being a chosen heir, and I 
suspect Fawkes will somehow be involved with the honor--we've 
already seen interaction--even respect--between Fawkes and Harry. I 
suspect Dumbledore will have been the previous chosen heir.
