Anyway, the more I think about apparating, the less of a good idea it seems to be something from a writers point of view. Especially if words/wands are not required.
Any thoughts?

I have several. I agree that apparition was not a bright idea to put into the series--unless it's going to be critical later on; that is, be something more than just mere transportation... if not, it's so far just been something to (it seems, unnecessarily) complicate the story, but who knows what JKR has up her sleeve? I hope there's something, anyways.
I think wands are pretty much required. Remember the dangers of "splinching" (improper apparition)? If we see wands as being a focusing tool--to make spells more powerful/accurate/etc.--I'd imagine that it's basically a necessity for apparition. There's got to be limitations; that it's a large magical drain or incredibly difficult over large distances (is that canon?). We know there are jinxes to prevent apparition, anyways. (Dumbledore tells Fudge the Death Eaters are under one, after he defeats them)
