Actually I was referring to two episodes in the books. The first is 
Harry's dream in Chapter 7 "The Sorting Hat" of SS/PS.

"He was wearing Professor Quirrell's turban, which kept talking 
to him, telling him he must transfer to Slytherin at once, because 
it was his destiny."

It seems this dream must be connected with the link between 
Voldemort's mind and Harry's. Voldemort is dwelling on the 
Sorting and therefore Harry, in his dream, dwells on it too.

The other episode is in OOP ch 11"The Sorting Hat's New Song":

Harry says,
"If you've got a problem sharing a dormitory with me, go and ask 
McGonagall if you can be moved..."

to which Seamus replies, "He's right, I don't want to share a 
dormitory with him any more, he's mad."

So there are  two hints that the Sorting Hat's decisions aren't 
final. Of course the Hat claims it's never yet been wrong, but that 
doesn't mean that its decisions haven't ever been overruled.
