I'm replying to my own post here, but I should have added a few
points. I too have always been troubled by Apparation. JKR does
point out that it's difficult, that a license is required, and that
things can go seriously! wrong (eg., splinching). But how can
someone apparate to a place that they've never seen? Simply by
coordinates? (For example, Bill, Charlie, and Percy apparate to the
Quidditch World Cup, but they had *probably* never been to that exact
and crowded! location before.) And if this is how it works, then how
does one prevent apparating into something like a tree or person,
etc.?

I'm wondering if JKR found her inspiration for Apparation in the
science fiction classic, The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester.
Here, characters can jaunte (much like apparating), but only up to a
certain number of miles per jaunte. Also, there are things like
jaunting platforms that help control jaunting into things that could
ruin one's day!

So I guess my point is this: I agree that JKR needs to spend some
more time considering the implications of apparating. She says it's
not easy, but she just doesn't support that with enough actual
evidence.
