Incidentally, Hagrid is not particularly smart nor well-informed. 
We've also heard that no one has ever broken out of Azkaban, and 
that's turned out to be false for the third time in book V. It seems 
that most of the generalizations and oversimplifications we find in 
HP are myths rather than truths (which is something I appreciate very 
much).
