I wonder if the whole "wand chooses the wizard" thing has more to do 
with getting your full potential rather than rudimentry skills. 
Neville and Ron's used wands don't prevent them from doing spells at 
the level they would be doing them at Hogwarts. I imagine if they 
were to want to achieve DD type precision and power this is when 
they would need a properly matched wand.
 
I picture it like tuning a race car to a driver, you can set a car 
up and it'll go fast and do everything a race car should do no 
mattter who is in it, but if you want every last drop of speed out 
of it you have to tune it to the driver and track.
