I love SHIP debates. However, some posters seem to be pontificating
on conjectured SHIP as if their and ONLY their SHIPS are plausible if
the Harry Potter story be properly told.

If there is one thing that JKR made sure of in writing this series it
is that NO ONE - be they reader or character {neither Trelawney,
Firenze, nor even Dumbledore} can predict the future with 100%
certainty. There are lots of juicy hints scattered everywhere in the
first five books, and some may matter and some may not.

I don't believe that what passes for interpretative "canon" should be
used by anyone to shoot down the SHIPs proposed by other posters to
this site - unless there is an OBVIOUS and WRITTEN error or omission
(say .. Ron is attracted to Hermione's straight black hair and
dottiness).

I can easily develop arguments "from canon" to suppory any
Male/Female SHIP combination of the above 6 characters {except
Ron/Ginny}. What is even more interesting is that I would be
satisfied by any combination of them if supported by JKR's writing
skill and awesome plotting ability. The endless character development
and plotting possibilities are ultimately what make her books so
satisfying and absorbing.

The SHIP of Harry/Hermione is just as valid as Harry/Ginny or
Ron/Hermione Neville/Hermione or Neville/Ginny Ron/Luna
Neville/Luna or {yes .... even} Harry/Luna (which I happen to
favor) - and I {or better yet of course, JKR} can easily develop an
EXTREMELY convincing story line supported by "canon" how any of
these SHIPs can happen and even be DESTINED to happen !

So please ! Give JKR some credit in crafting a tale where virtually
everything is possible and let your fellow SHIPpers have some fun
without pontificating about what YOU think has to happen and shooting
down the theories of your fellow posters. Their opinions are just as
valid as yours or mine!

-----------------------------------------------------------
Some examples -

SUPPOSITION 1
It's quite clear to me that Hermione has already set her sights on
Harry - he will have to betray / deeply disappoint / greatly offend
her (maybe all three) in order to drive her away.

RESPONSE 1
May I ask why? Are there any proofs for that in canon.

SAMs RESPONSE 1
No more proof than any other SHIP possibility. As a matter of fact,
there are more "proofs" of the H/H SHIP supposition than any other
SHIP.

SUPPOSITION 2
For his part, Hermione will be the only one on his screens as he
grows up. He knows her, likes her, admires her, respects her, trusts
her absolutely, and depends on her. This is the exact opposite of
infatuation: this is the stuff that burrows deep, latches on firmly,
and holds people together through thick & thin.

RESPONSE 2
One might argue the same about Ron. Ron "knows her, likes her,
admires her, respects her, trusts her absolutely, and depends on her".
It may be that Harry only discovers his true feelings for Hermione
when he is forced to contemplate life without her. If forced to
choose between her and Ron, I'm afraid it's 'so long, Ron'.

SAM's RESPONSE 2
That choice between Ron and Hermione is by no means a given according
to "canon" or according to "the real world". Based on events in this
series, it can go either way. As a matter of fact, by the end of OOP
he doesnt really fancy either of them as much as he had in the past -
and it wouldnt suprsie me if there is more distance between Harry and
both of them as Book 6 develops. By the way, the word "love" wasn't
mentioned in either the response or the supposition.

SUPPOSITION 3
Luna and Harry? Not a chance. She and Ron have a much more similar
sort of vibe, she's much more interested in Ron than in Harry, and so
far her interactions w/ Harry have been of a 'female Ron' sort:
comradely, companionable, off-hand, very much "guy-style". MUCH more
Ron's type (at least, he's a sitting duck for her). In Book 6, I
expect to see her making even more effort to catch Ron's attention,
in part by simply inserting herself into the group;

RESPONSE 3
Most readers would agree with that.

SAMs RESPONSE 3
And since when are most readers right ???
Puhleeeeze - dont get me started on that dismissal .......
Seems to me that in SHIP analogies, Luna is to Ron as Harry is to
Cho --- an infatuation at best that can easily be grown out of .....

And when any good writer sees "Not a chance" they read "Gotta Happen
That Way!" because if they can pull it off successfully they have a
GREAT book on their hands.

FINALLY -----
I have had several posts here as to the possibility of a Luna and
Harry SHIP and the more I think about it the more I think it is
destined ..... and can happen VERY easily ! Please read OOP 862-864.
When it comes down to it, Luna is the only one whose words comforted
Harry before he left Hogwarts.

Once again, that does not mean that is the ONLY way the story MUST
unfold -- that is my opinion and not "canon" {and hopefully not canon
fodder}
