Here goes-- my 1st post:
In OOTP, p. 542, following Harry's first session doing occlumency
with Snape, Harry collapses in the dormitory and has another insight
into LV's feelings. "[Harry] wondered, with a feeling of great
trepidation, what had happened to make Lord Voldemort the happiest he
had been in fourteen years."
This brought to mind a brief discussion on the list about lengths of
teaching service. On p. 363, Snape tells Umbridge he's been teaching
for fourteen years.
Now, I realize that JKR means for the reader to immediately connect
LV's happy feelings with the subsequent revelation about the DE's
escape from Azkaban, but it makes for an interesting possibility if
it's Snape's first session with Harry that's causing LV's extreme
happiness....
And, yes, I think Snape is one of the most fascinating characters in
the books. I haven't yet figured out which side of the fence he's on.
