Couldn't the third tail feather be for another one of the six? It 
seems trios or sextets are rather important or crucial in the story.

Finally someone else also noticed that little detail. I've been 
thinking if Neville was a Gryffindor that the hat thought about 
placing in Hufflepuff and if Harry was a Gryffindor that the hat 
thought about placing in Slytherin then couldn't the third character 
that receives the core be a Gryffindor that the hat thought about 
placing in Ravenclaw?
