Yes, I'm a Sirius fan and have to respond to this! Like most of the
characters, he has strengths and weaknesses, and the above assessment
diminishes one of his greatest virtues and tragic flaws--his
unwavering loyalty to James. If he said it once, he said it a
billion times--he was willing to die for his friends, die for the
cause. He knew he could withstand anything Voldemort could throw at
him, and Voldemort knew this--that's exactly how he chracterized
Sirius in OOTP in the vision he put in Harry's head--Sirius being
tortured and saying he would die first.

So, it was a stroke of luck for Voldemort that Sirius turned the duty
over to Peter, undoubtedly fully expecting Voldemort to come after
him (Sirius) and maybe even kill him in a rage, thus leaving Voldie
without the info he sought. But, alas....Wormtail.

That's my take on it so far. And I do think the hero archetype Harry
has as part of his psychological make-up is very attuned to this hero
side of Sirius and thus the major attraction to him in OOTP. Sirius
was doomed from the start though, it's in his name, Sirius "Dog Star,
the brightest star in the heavens" ending in Black. In
mourning...Ariadne
