I actually don't think they has been a lot of discussion of gnomes.
Personally, I don't think the gnomes are very significant to the
story, although something weird somewhat significant but still comical
could happen. Like the DE's attack the Weasley house and the gnomes
out of loyalty to Arthur who likes them and treats them nice, come
running out and bite the DE's on the ankles thus giving the Weasley's
the upper hand in the fight.
Overal, gnomes don't seem to be given much intelligence and they don't
seem especially magical. They seem somewhat like fairies, vaguely
humanoid, but generally of animal like intelligence; like very ugly
kittens.
So, no, I don't think they are going to be big players in the overal
story. 
Just a thought.
