Garden Gnomes

I'm new here, so forgive me if this has been discussed to death before, but 
(on the topic of "deeper significance") - do you suppose there's anything 
more to the "de-gnoming the garden at the Burrow" scene other than comic 
value?  Gnomes are a species that haven't been discussed in the books before 
or since that scene, if I remember rightly.
