I think there can still be a super-Neville who provides critical help to Harry as he defeats Voldemort. Neville is a quiet character, and, I think, a humble character. This is most likely thanks to his fears that he might be a squib and his distressing childhood. 

In any case, I can see Neville saving the day and surprising us all, but still choosing to become the new Hogwarts Herbology Professor when all of the fuss has died down. He'd probably like that life much better.  :)

Of course, that brings up the question -- what happens to Professor Sprout?
