They certainly seem pretty well hidden - after all, there's a ton of
portraits around Hogwarts, so why would the Fat Lady be significant?
So, following this reasoning, wouldn't Sirius *have* to be in
Gryffindor since he knew how to get into Gryffindor Tower?

Yes, this has loads of credibility. Besides, we pretty much know that
Sirius is in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff to begin with.
Now the only thing we know for sure is that Peter was NOT in
Hufflepuff. He'd only get into Gryffindor by an extreme fluke, he
doesn't seem particularly bright, and I don't see him being a
Slytherin and Sirius not suspecting anything when he switched.
Anyone have ideas on ole Wormtail?
