Maybe I am wrong, but I thought it was explicitly stated that James was
also a Gryffindor seeker during his time at the school.

Two things come to my mind when I think about this. Firstly, the
Marauder's Map was written by Sirius, Peter, Remus and James. So
possibly they were all in different houses because every "secret"
location is clearly stated on the map. Each would know the "secrets" of
his own house.
However, I have some uncertainties about that theory. It appears, at
least "now", that houses don't really seem to inter-mingle with
friendships. Then I go on to further confuse myself and say that it's
higly possible the three boys were friends before they came to Hogwarts.
There, they met Peter, who is described as a boy who somewhat
"attached" himself to the group.
The second thing that comes to my mind is that Sirius can change himself
into a dog. Sirius could easly have been following one of the
Gryffindor's around without being detected and found the common room
that way. However, I think my first theory holds a bit more water. LOL!
