I actually have a theory for Neville that could very easily apply to
Peter. Perhaps his 11yr old self was sorted into Gryffindor because
he valued bravery and/or wanted to be more courageous. Placing him
in Gryffindor would give him the best chance to develop that
bravery. Peter chose the easy way out and hid behind his brave
friends rather than developing himself. JKR has already drawn a
parallel between Neville and Peter when Harry notes that Peter
Pettigrew's picture reminded him of Neville, and I have seen a lot
of speculation about how Neville made it into Gryffindor. I expect
that JKR will use any similarities between the two characters to
highlight the theme of choices.
