Harry and Snape

Everyone knows Snape despises Harry and Harry abhors Snape. But what 
is the cause of Snape's intense hatered? I've heard that perhasps 
James stole Lily from Snape. This is plasuable, but could it be more 
than that? 

Also, why did Snape leave the Death Eaters? Perhasps he 
knew of the plot to kill the Potters, but I doubt that. Also, is 
Snape a vampire? I think Snape is one of the most mysterious 
characters in the books.
