And Taryn responded:
> I think it would've been far more far-fetched to have a 14-year-old
speaking perfect grammar. The "me and someone else" is a common
mistake for "someone else and I" in speaking. I wouldn't think that
editors would touch much in /dialogue/, since people don't speak
perfectly.

And then I (Rhiannon the RavenSlyth) pitched in with my $0.02:
Perfect grammar is one thing; if any of the Trio suddenly began to
speak perfect, thesis-quality English, I'd be pretty disgusted
myself. But the line in question, IMHO, makes Ron sound considerably
younger than 14. Call me an elitist, but I would expect a fourteen-
year-old of reasonable intellectual ability (which Ron certainly is)
to know better than to start a sentence with "me and Hermione." What
I would have done, had I been the editor, would be to delete
that "helped" from the end of the sentence. "We helped.... Me and
Hermione" is much more tolerable to me than "We helped.... Me and
Hermione helped."
Off the subject a little, but dealing with the same quote: is JKR
purposely trying to highlight Ron's insecurity in this scene by using
dialogue that makes him seem younger?
Waiting as patiently as possible for OoP,
