Jack summarized:
> The Dark Mark is a magical tatoo inflicted by LV onto his followers.
> It is reserved for his inner cycle--the Death Eaters, those who are
> most loyal and useful to him. The effect is probably
> irreversible.
>
> The Dark Mark serves two functions that we know of:
> 1) A symbol of the Death Eaters Enslavement. They are branded for
> life.
> 2) A summoning beacon. LV use it to summon the DEs individually or
> as a group.
I apologize if someone has said this, I've not been following closely (nor
am I through all my email).
I have further theorized that the Mark binds the DEs to Voldemort unto
death. Death Eater has reminded my husband of "Sin Eaters," a Welsh
tradition--people who take a person's sins upon themselves. The Death Eaters
may have taken Voldemort's death upon themselves; their bond to him may be
part of his striving to achieve immortality.
If they were bound to death, they would have *known* that he was still alive
someplace, because they weren't dead. I have thought this may be the reason
he is so *very* pissed off in the graveyard scene; he knows for absolute
certainty that they *chose* not to search for him, because the bond of the
Mark would not allow them not to know he lived.
Also if it was a bond unto death: regardless of what his task may be, Snape
is about to actively set about something that will, if it works, ultimately
bring about his own death. Reason enough to look pale; reason enough for
Dumbledore to look apprehensive.
Ooooh. Can't wait to find out more.
