I'm on digest and trying frantically to keep up here---please forgive me if 
someone else already struck on this interesting revelation......

The Eagle Owl is indeed an actually bird of which there are a number of 
varieties.  They inhabit Africa, Eurasia, Asia, and there is one species in the 
Phillipines.  In North America the Great Horned Owl is part of the same genus.

Their genus is------get this-------- "BUBO".
