This is a great theory. It's mentioned in the list's "Fantastic
Posts and where to Find Them"
<http://www.hpfgu.org.uk/faq/james_lily.html> where we are given the
summary:
This has been the subject of regular speculation on the list. The
question has not been answered. Evidence that James, and by extent,
Harry, are descendents of Gryffindor are the fact that Harry pulled
Gryffindor's sword out of the Sorting Hat in CoS, and the fact that
the Potters were living in Godric's Corner when they were killed
(Book I, Ch. 1), which may be in some way linked to Godric
Gryffindor.

While there are several pointers to this being true, I really hope
it isn't. Somehow if Harry was destined by birth to fight Voldemort
it would reduce the power of Dumbledore's statement:
"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more
than our abilities" CoS p285 (US Edition)
Cheers,
Dumbledad
