I think that what you describe is *possible* but not at all likely.  
I think that Sirius is intended to stay for the remaining three 
books.  He can serve the plot very well that way, because of all the 
possibilities associated with his character:

1) Not a lot of people know his true nature, so there are lots of fun 
plot possibilities there.

2) He loves Harry and is on the right side, but he's no push-over, so 
he can be tapped to do some unpleasant jobs.

3) He serves as a dramatic tension partner with Snape.

I'm sure there are other good reasons to keep the character around 
too.
