OOP: My questions

Well I successfully finished the book by 11:30 last night and these 
are my two major questions that I'm hoping someone might be able to 
point out that I just missed something while trying to read through 
it all before bed.

1)THESTRALS: If Harry saw his parents die (his mother was shielding 
him, therefor infront of him and in his range of vision), why could 
he never see the thestrals before?

2)MARAUDERS MAP: How did Harry get it?
