I think that the death of Sirius demonstrates the uncanny genuuis of 
JKR.  For 3 years people have been buzzing about who would die- and  
the debate focused primarily on Hagrid  and Dumbledore.   I think 
that several other deaths appeared imminent in earlier chapters.  
The shockingly sudden murder of Sirius is powerful.  It also serves 
to illuminate the nature of evil.  It is unpredictable, it is 
unfair, and  it can leave  tremendous heartache in its wake.
  I think Nick knows that Sirius has "gone on" because only certian 
people become ghosts.  It appears that  Nick is saying that some 
choice is involved.  Nick chose to be a ghost because he  was afriad 
to move on. 
I predict that the mirror will be back in future books- I suspect 
there were 3 of them (James, Sirius, and Lupin) and   they will be a 
method of communication in the future.
