After GoF, there is a prominent theory that 'Snape-is-nice-to-Draco-
to-get-to-Lucius' in order to get some spying done and it is pretty 
much confirmed in this book by the following comments:

Sirius: 'Tell me, how is Lucius Malfoy these days? I expect he's 
delighted his lapdog's working at Hogwarts, isn't he?' (UK version, 
p. 460)

Umbridge: 'You are being deliberately unhelpful! I expect better, 
Lucius Malfoy always speaks most highly of you!' (p. 657)
